Occupational Noise Assessment

Noise exposure in the workplace can be assessed using either a hand-held sound level meter or using a noise dosimeter mounted on the worker's shoulder.

With a hand-held sound level meter you measure the sound level at each location and use this with the length of time the workers spends there to calculate the exposure. With a noise dosimeter you measure for the full working shift and it provides you with the overall exposure or % Dose value.

The dBadge mounts on the worker's clothing using the clips provided.

Measuring close to the ear ensures that the noise levels measured truly show the worker's exposure levels, usually expressed as TWA or %Dose.

Occupational Noise - Factory Noise Surveys

Regulations

The dBadge2 has settings making it suitable for OSHA, MSHA, ACGIH, NIOSH and most other occupational noise measurement.

Low Noise Environments

For sound level measurement in lower noise environments you should use a hand-held sound level meter. For longer term measurements these hand-held meters can be mounted on a tripod.

Suitable meters would be the CEL620B Class 2 Sound Level Meter or the CEL633C1 Class 1 Sound Level Meter.

1. Charge
Ensure dBadges are charged.

2. Calibrate
Use the Calibrator that is included and check the dosimeter function. This is a requirement of the regulations.

3. Start the Measurement
After mounting the dBadge on the worker's clothing the measurement can be started. This avoids creating false noise while fixing it to the clothing.

4. Stop the Measurement
At the end of the working day the measurement can be stopped. It is better to measure for the full shift so that the dBadge can calculate the %Dose or Time Weighted Average.

5. View the Results
The results of the measurement can be viewed immediately on the display. If you don't want to use the software you can note the results down manually.

6. Downloading and Reporting
The software is included with the kit. Once installed, you connect to each dBadge using the docking station, transfer the measurements to the computer and generate reports.
