The acoustic calibrators in this range have two output levels: 94 dB and 114 dB. The output frequency is the standard 1 kHz. The two models available are almost identical, but one meets IEC 60942 to Class 1 (the most accurate) and the other to Class 2. They are designed for use with the range of Type 1 and Type 2 sound level meters and noise dosimeters that we offer.
Most sound level meters expect the calibrator to have an output tone of 1 kHz at 94 dB. However, many noise dosimeters expect the same tone but at a level of 114 dB. Rather than having two calibrators, the CR516 and CR517 can do both jobs.
You would generally use a Class 2 Calibrator with a Type 2 Sound Level Meter and a Class 1 Calibrator for a Type 1 Sound Level Meter.
If you have a mix of Type 1 and Type 2 meters and dosimeters and want to share a calibrator between them you should use a Class 1 Calibrator. As Class 1 matches or exceeds Class 2 in all aspects in the IEC 60942 standard you can safely use a Class 1 calibrator on a Class 2 sound level meter or on a noise dosimeter.
